Согласно классическому определению «неспособность к независимой социальной адаптации», т.е. снижение интеллектуального коэффициента, а у взрослых - остановка умственного развития на уровне детей того или иного возраста; С. является симптомом многих приобретенных заболеваний и НЗЧ, а также может быть независимой патологией, обусловленной некоторыми мутациями, в частности, хромосомными, сцепленными с полом (их известно по крайней мере 17), наиболее распространенной из которых является мутация, приводящая к синдрому Мартина-Белл.
